How to get the best out of your personal injury lawyer
When making the decision to contact a personal injury lawyer to work on your behalf in your claim for compensation, it is important that you know the right questions to ask to get the best advice from your lawyer.
Make sure your lawyer is the right lawyer for you
Find a lawyer that understands you, and who you understand. Make sure your lawyer speaks in plain English and understands you and your situation.
Ask questions
If you don’t understand something that your lawyer has said to you, ask them to explain it again, or explain it differently. You do not need to understand legal jargon to understand how personal injury claims work.
Be honest
Failing to tell your lawyer everything can be a costly mistake. Disclose everything – your lawyer will decide what is and isn’t relevant to your claim.
Be clear about what you expect
If you expect your lawyer to do something, tell them.
Discuss fees
You need to know how your lawyer calculates their fee. They may not be able to give you a precise amount on how much it will cost to get to the end of your claim, however they should be able to explain how their fees are calculated. If you do not understand, ask your lawyer to explain it again.
Make a list
Before you meet with your lawyer make a list of things that you want to talk about. Tick them off during the meeting. Make sure that at the end of the meeting you have all of your questions answered.
Be realistic
A good personal injury lawyer can help you through your claim and get fair compensation. Your lawyer cannot fix your back pain or miraculously get your “old life” back. Be positive and have a realistic view on what your lawyer can do rather than what they can’t.
