Gas Explosions – A preventable workplace accident

ACCIDENTS INVOLVING GAS EXPLOSIONS

Compressed gas, which powers numerous tools and many forklifts across the Gold Coast, cause severe injuries every year.

Usually stored in highly pressurised cylinders, gas like propane is poisonous on its own. Inhalation over a period of time can cause chronic disease.

Just like leaking natural gas, the contents of gas cylinders are highly flammable. When gas fills a confined space, it can ignite with only a small amount of energy. One spark can cause an explosion, setting a structure on fire and causing serious injury.

Workers injured in gas explosions may be able to claim compensation under workers’ compensation if the injury occurred in the course of their employment. Otherwise, a claim for compensation may arise against a third party or property owner for creating the conditions that led to the explosion.
